Food Security and Globalization

Overview

This curriculum unit, although designed for a high school course, can be altered for various grade and age levels. The focus of this unit is to construct an explanation of food insecurity in context of economic globalization and colonialism and explore institutions which function to maintain food deserts, food insecurity, and childhood obesity.

Objectives

  1. Analyze and compare food-ways of households across the world.
  2. Evaluate institutions which function to maintain food deserts, food insecurity, and childhood obesity.
  3. Analyze food companies and the ways in which they promote the kinds of foods that contribute to obesity.
  4. Explain how global food systems end up leaving out those in poverty.
  5. Analyze and understand that globalized/industrialized food is not “cheap”.
  6. Construct an explanation of food insecurity in context of economic globalization and colonialism.
  7. Understand who is advocating alliances between consumers and producers.
