Senegalese children smiling..

Health and Child Welfare

By Dr. Sarah Summy

Children all over the world are in need of critical literacy skills as they grow and attempt to make meaning and understand the consequences of globalization within society. However, many children are not given access to this type of curriculum for multiple reasons such as:  curriculum availability, teacher preparation, political influences, family perceptions, and cultural beliefs.  There is a need to increase our understanding as to why access is denied or minimized.  For this project, we have investigated and developed a curriculum unit focusing on the meaning and consequences of globalization as it relates to the philosophical, sociological and historical-political aspects of children and youth with disabilities in West Africa and the Midwest United States.
